Day 3 | Hop-on Hop-off bus tour

Things to do in Malta?

There are tonnes of things to do in Malta but we had only a weekend this time. After the visit to Gozo Island we spent our last day in the main island.

Day 3 morning, the rain stopped and the sun occasionally peaked through the clouds. We chose to go with the Hop-on Hop-off bus company that started just outside of our Sliema Marina Hotel.

As we have walked all the way around Valletta, we made stops at:

  • Vittoriosa backstreet
  • Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Prehistoric Temples

My favourite stop is Vittoriosa -strolling through the backstreets and alleys in this little city. Vittoriosa in maltese is Birgu, it’s an old fortified city on the south side of the Grand Harbour. We sat down and had a coffee with our breakfast (Ham and cheese toast) just by the harbour then walked around until we made our way back to the same stop where we got off the bus.

Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Prehistoric Temples stand on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Fifla. Before getting to Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Prehistoric Temples stop you will pass through the Blue Grotto which I strongly recommend you to get off the bus and have a wander around. It was a shame that we didn’t have time to see the Blue Grotto as we passed through, well, that’s another reason for me to go back to Malta some point in life. Perhaps on my return the weather will be better.

The surrounding landscape is spectacular. When we enter Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Prehistoric Temples there is a museum at the entrance where my friend picked up a pair of 5D glasses to watch a show.  I wandered off to see the actual temples. There are 2 temple sites in the park, 500 meters away from each other. I  walked by the cliff after visiting both temples as they are both relatively small. The view from the cliff was absolutely stunning. I chatted to a man who sits on the cliff almost everyday (as he told me) as he wasn’t doing anything in particular. He said he just loves the location, quietness on the cliff and watching different visitors drop by everyday to have a little chat just like we were doing.

On our way back we enjoyed being able to sit on the top level of the bus (finally) whilst sightseeing and the warmth of the sun on our faces!
